Norfolk schools invited to join Golden Bike Lock Challenge this summer

A fun new cycling challenge is heading to Norfolk schools this summer, led by local bike brand specialists Rehook.

The Golden Bike Lock Challenge will run from Monday 29 June to Friday 3 July 2026, giving schools a creative and engaging way to encourage pupils to cycle to school and think positively about cycling.

Developed and delivered by Rehook, the challenge uses eye-catching “Golden Bike Lock” boxes to help schools track participation and celebrate success throughout the week. The simple, reward-based approach makes it easy for schools to take part while creating real excitement among pupils.

The challenge builds on a successful 2025 pilot, where participating schools reported high engagement, increased levels of cycling and positive feedback from staff on how straightforward the challenge was to deliver. The pilot showed that a visible, shared reward can make a big impact in a short space of time.

Some funding is available for eligible schools through Norfolk County Council’s AtoBetter School programme, helping to support participation where criteria are met.

Esme Holtom, AtoBetter Travel Plan Coordinator states:

“Anything that helps make walking and cycling feel exciting and achievable for children is a win. The Golden Bike Lock Challenge shows how a simple idea can spark enthusiasm for active travel and get whole school communities involved.”

Schools are encouraged to contact Rehook directly to find out more about the challenge, sign up, and discuss options.

Wayne Taylor, CEO of Rehook states:

“We are so pleased to be bringing the campaign back for 2026. Last year we saw a 280% increase in bike usage during the event and maintained 237% in the week after. ”

The Golden Bike Lock Challenge is open to schools across Norfolk and offers a ready-made, high-impact way to promote active travel before the end of the summer term.

Schools interested in taking part should contact Rehook to register their interest at gold@rehook.bike by Friday 22nd May.
