What is an Individual Time Trial (TT)?

An Individual Time Trial (TT) is a type of cycling race where cyclists compete against the clock. Unlike other cycling races, riders start the race at different times and do not race against each other. The rider with the fastest time is the winner.

In an Individual TT, each rider is timed from a standing start to a finish line. The course is usually a short out-and-back loop, or a point-to-point course. Riders must complete the course alone and cannot draft off other riders. This makes the race a true test of individual strength, speed and endurance.

Individual TTs are popular in professional cycling, and many professional races feature an Individual TT stage. The Tour de France, for example, has a long history of Individual TTs. In 2018, the Individual TT stage of the Tour de France was won by Tom Dumoulin with an average speed of 54.9 km/h (34.1 mph).
