What is Ultra Cycling?

Ultra cycling is a type of long-distance cycling which involves cycling across long distances for extended periods of time. It is a physically and mentally challenging activity that requires endurance, dedication and commitment. Ultra cycling can involve cycling across a single stage, or over multiple days, with some events lasting up to several weeks.

In terms of distance, ultra cycling events generally range from 200 to over 2000 miles, and the terrain can vary from flat roads to mountainous courses. Ultra cyclists must be well equipped with the right gear and supplies to make sure they can complete the ride safely and enjoyably. This includes things such as proper nutrition, hydration, and clothing.

Ultra cycling is a growing sport, with a number of events held worldwide each year. According to the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association, there were over 2000 ultra cycling events held in 2018 in over 50 countries. Additionally, the number of registered ultra cyclists grew from 9,500 in 2017 to more than 11,000 in 2018.

Ultra cycling is a challenging and rewarding activity for experienced cyclists, and provides a great opportunity to make new friends and explore different parts of the world.

The Origin of the Term 'Ultra Cycling'

The term 'Ultra Cycling' was first coined in the early 1980s by Kurt Roesch, a cyclist from Germany. He used the term to describe long-distance cycling events that took place over extended periods of time, typically lasting several days and covering distances of 500km or more.

Ultra cycling quickly gained popularity and by the late 1980s, similar events were being held in other countries such as France, the United Kingdom and the United States. In 1991, the first official ultra cycling event, the Race Across America (RAAM) was held in the United States.

Today, ultra cycling is a popular form of cycling for athletes who want to challenge themselves physically and mentally. Races range from multi-day events such as RAAM and the Tour Divide, to single-day events such as the London-Edinburgh-London and the Paris-Brest-Paris.
