With the new year in full swing, and a lot of people trying to improve their health, so we have been asked numerous questions about cycling and fitness. We are always happy to help. This is a subject which is very close to my heart, because I used cycling to get into shape for my kids, and it worked very well. I now use cycling as part of my weekly fitness routine.

Can you lose belly fat by cycling?

Cycling is a great way to burn all body fat, including belly fat. A lot of people struggle to keep the pounds off, and the belly can be the hardest place to lose weight. Cycling uses all of the bodies muscles and is great for cardio, so it will burn calories. In turn, the fat will be burnt off. Probably the best way to burn fat is to do interval training. This means you go as hard and fast as you can for a short period of time. A good place to start would be 5 minutes fast, 5 minutes slow, and repeat as much as you can. You can then work up to 20 minutes fast and 3 minutes slow. It will be hard at first, but you will see the rewards quite quickly, so I recommend it highly.

Is 30 minutes cycling enough?

Any amount of time is better for you than nothing at all. If you are not used to exercising, then 30 minutes is a great place to start. It doesn’t have to be too intense at first for you to see the health benefits. The first few 30 minutes sessions will get your body used to moving again,  and build muscle memory. 30 minutes is a great platform to start from so go ahead and give it a go.

Is cycling good for over 50s?

Cycling is a fantastic workout for the over 50s. Some older people have problems with stiff knees and other joints, so a low impact workout is a great choice. You do not have to do high intensity riding, but a slower longer ride can be more enjoyable. The most important factor is to never give up. You’re never too old to ride your bike and enjoy it at the same time. Take the family with you, stop for a picnic, and enjoy the great outdoors. If you are still in great shape then why not aim to be competitive and really show the young ones how it's done!!

Is biking good for your butt?

If you take up cycling, your butt will love you. Cycling is a great way to lose fat in general so you will trim those pounds from your butt. It is also great for building muscle, so the combination of weight loss and muscle gain will do wonders for your butt. An important factor is to make sure you are actually using your bum muscles and not just your legs. You can do this by having periods of standing up on your pedals and focusing on particular muscles. I strongly recommend cycling if you want to tighten up your bum.

Is cycling better than running?

Cycling can be better in many ways than running. Although cycling in general doesn't burn as many calories as running, it can put less shock on your body. Cycling has less impact on the bones so there is a good chance you will be able to cycle for longer and faster than you can run. Personally I find cycling a more enjoyable activity because it lets you see more of the great outdoors in a shorter time. This makes me actually want to get out and do it more, whereas running can sometimes seem a chore.
