What is Double Cycling?

Double cycling is a term used in the sport of cycling. It refers to a style of cycling in which two cyclists ride together, side by side, while pedaling at the same rate. The two cyclists will typically take turns leading the group, with the other cyclist following close behind. This style of cycling is popular among competitive cyclists, as it allows them to conserve energy and work together to complete a ride faster.

Double cycling is often used in races, where cyclists can work together to maintain a higher speed than would be possible for a single cyclist. It is also used in recreational rides, where two or more cyclists can ride together and enjoy the camaraderie. According to recent statistics, double cycling is the most popular form of group cycling, with over 40% of competitive cyclists choosing to ride in double formation.

Double cycling is a great way to stay safe and have fun while cycling. It allows cyclists to enjoy the scenery, challenge each other, and work together to complete their ride. Whether you're a competitive cyclist or a recreational rider, double cycling is a great way to enjoy the sport of cycling.

The Origins of “Double” in Cycling

The term “double” has been used in cycling since the late 19th century. It was first used to describe a type of bicycle race, later known as a “double century”, which required riders to complete two consecutive centuries (200 miles) in one day. The first documented double century race was held in England in 1891.

The concept of a double century race quickly spread to other countries, such as the United States and France. By the early 20th century, the term “double” had become synonymous with any long distance event, such as double centuries, double triathlons, and double marathons.

Today, the term “double” is still used to describe long distance cycling events, but it is also used to describe any long distance race, regardless of the sport. For example, many running races are now referred to as “doubles”, as well as swimming and triathlon events.
